For as long as I can remember, I have always known health and wellness was going to be a big part of my life. I discovered CrossFit back in 2016 while I was in high school but was too scared to join. In 2018 during my sophomore year of college, I finally built up the courage and joined my first gym. From that point forward, I knew I found the right fitness program for me. CrossFit is now more than just an exercise routine but a part of my life that pushes me physically and mentally every day.
I was previously a coach at CrossFit San Luis Obispo where I had the ability to share my passion for health and wellness and assist individuals achieve their fitness goals and surpass their physical and mental capabilities. This has also allowed me to also pursue a career in Physical Therapy where I recently received my Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from the University of St. Augustine.

Growing up in San Luis Obispo, I always loved exercise and grew up playing soccer and ran track. I loved feeling a part of a team and going to practice. When I started running half marathons in college, I began to have knee pain. I was then tricked into CrossFit by my partner Ian to help fix my knee pain. He slowly got me into it and before I knew it, I was hooked. I have been doing CrossFit for 3 years now. I continue to be amazed at how this sport pushes you to your physical and mental limits and highlights things you never thought your body could accomplish. Not only has it become a way to get stronger, but it has reinforced my mental health and serves as an outlet that is constant through my life changes.
I am excited to join this coaching team. I am eager to aid members in building their confidence and together accomplish milestones through the power of crossfit and community. It has altered my life in more ways than one and I hope to do the same for others.

Hey! I had my first taste of CrossFit back in 2014. Though it didn’t stick then, the atmosphere and OLY lifts did. So one day 3 years ago I worked up the courage to walk into my local CrossFit gym and express through motion how bad I was at all of it. It was just as I remembered, I was hooked and I haven’t looked back since. Before CrossFit I was in the Marine Corps which required a level of fitness but more importantly it introduced me to my love of teaching and leading. Combining these two passions was an eventual no-brainer for me. I’m genuinely looking forward to teaching, training, and laughing with everyone that calls Humanity home. I’m originally from Fresno, California, which is where I completed my L1 Trainer Course. If I’m not coaching you’ll find me with a barbell, hopefully in a strong position, as happily as can be!

Growing up in Texas, I’ve always been a very active person. I took after my dad by going on runs with him to train for his marathons and hit the driving range to practice my golf swing with him. Being a part of team sports in high school, like golf and volleyball, I’ve always enjoyed the built-in community that came with them. It wasn’t until later in college where some friends from church invited me to try out a tiny CrossFit gym in the small town of Huntsville, TX, that I immediately fell in love with the idea of throwing heavy weight around and feeling accomplished, all while having fun with my friends.
I was first invited to try out Humanity by a friend and was immediately bought in by the friendly, yet competitive nature of this CrossFit gym.

GYMNASTICS COACH
Being a San Diego native, you would think I had grown up on the beach and in the water. Nope! I can’t even swim! I actually grew up in a gymnastics gym. I competed through USA Gymnastics level 8 at the Mission Valley YMCA. When I retired from the sport at age 16, I started coaching under some of the best coaches in the field—Glen Vaughan and Steve Butcher taught me the fundamentals of falling safely, having a strong core, and decent flexibility. After coaching for 10 years, I then judged competitive gymnastics until having my first son in 2014.
Around that same time, my sister was doing Crossfit and loving it, but I wasn’t sold. Then a friend from my church said there was a gym that was true to the original intention of CrossFit (one workout a day), and I should check it out. I stopped by Crossfit Humanity and LOVED it! I soon started coaching gymnastics. Over the years, I have slowly but surely embraced “kipping” gymnastics movements, but still find my heart is in strict movements.

CROSSFIT COACH
Hola! I’ve been doing CrossFit for the last 6 years. I started in Santa Barbara, CA but have been lucky enough to have joined a few boxes in Northern and Southern California, with some truly amazing communities. Before CrossFit I played soccer for 18 years, football for 4 years, and track and field for 3 years. I also ran a few half marathons with my best time being 1 hour and 33 minutes—I like speed!
Being born in Mexico City, I started CrossFit with a mission—to encourage the Latin community to be more involved with and culturally embrace the healthy habits of this sport. What CrossFit means to me is a very special question. It’s a way to connect your body and mind with space and time. I try to be present in every lift and every workout. I believe that in today’s world, we focus so much on our past and future selves, we forget to be present. And that no matter how your workout goes, just be proud of yourself for trying to be a better version of you!

My experience with CrossFit began very reluctantly in 2016. At the time I was playing college volleyball and had no interest in working out more. But when a friend asked me to go with him to drop in and “try crossfit” I agreed to tag alone. The first class I took was death by burpees and I was the last one going. I remember the whole class cheering me on and supporting me. In recognizing the camaraderie and community in a CrossFit gym is second to none, I’ve been hooked. I have been in a CrossFit gym since.

Rica comes to San Diego by way of Minneapolis, MN, where they were first exposed to the world of CrossFit. Though they were always engaged in fitness and sports throughout their life (Tae Kwan Do, soccer, basketball, football, and later, their favorite, tennis) they never encountered the level of intensity and community quite like they had experienced with CrossFit. While inspired by the intensity and competitive aspects of this world, Rica was particularly hooked after witnessing incredible feats of strength and skill from those who we don’t typically associate with weightlifting—older, queer, trans, female or femme athletes—all of whom found empowerment and joy from this method of training.
In 2018, Rica became certified and started coaching at Solcana Fitness in Minneapolis and Mastodon Strength and Conditioning (Floral City CrossFit) in their hometown in Michigan. Through these experiences, Rica has cultivated a deep appreciation for working directly with athletes to grow and develop their own abilities. Rica is incredibly honored to be a part of the CrossFit Humanity community and is excited to work with athletes on all their fitness goals!

HEAD COACH / GENERAL MANAGER
From a young age, I have loved all elements of fitness favouring running, football & rugby in high school. Sports kept me active, which was great for my health, especially after being hospitalized due to an asthma attack early in life. This still didn’t stop me from drifting off the health and fitness path in early adulthood. At age 25, I discovered CrossFit, which completely turned my life around. It didn’t take long before I was re-educating myself and gaining the knowledge and experience I needed to help others. In 2013, I joined the CrossFit Witham team in Lincoln, UK.
CrossFit and staying healthy have not only given me the confidence to believe life has very few limitations but also opened doors I never imagined. It has allowed me to travel the world, coaching athletes from all walks of life and experiencing different communities and cultures. Beyond coaching, it’s given me the opportunity to compete in a variety of disciplines worldwide—from half Ironman triathlons to CrossFit competitions and even strongman events.
As a coach, I take pride in sharing that confidence with anyone who gives me the opportunity. No matter where you are in life, who you are, what you like, or what you don’t—if you want to become a better version of yourself, I believe in you. Forget anything that’s ever held you back or knocked you down. No one should ever feel like they don’t belong. If you want to achieve something, let’s do it together.

My name is Kim Bono, I have been involved in fitness my whole life. I grew up in Winchester MA. I was the kid in the neighborhood who would gather up all the neighborhood kids to play a game of street hockey, shoot hoops and play a game of horse, or red rover. I played HS Soccer, and Basketball, I played collegiate Soccer and Swimming. I received my Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Plymouth University in NH. I was a ski instructor at Waterville Valley NH and a Lifeguard on Craigville Beach Cape Cod. When I graduated from college I became a PE teacher in Lincoln Sudbury MA, as well as coached HS soccer and Lacrosse. I moved to San Diego in 1994 and worked for the Poway Unified School district teaching PE at Stone Ranch Elementary school In 4S Ranch. I found Crossfit by accident while training for triathlons. I googled cross training and “ Crossfit” popped up. I was curious about this training and wondered if it would help my triathlon training. I found a box in 4S Ranch called Crossfit PIA. I found this training to be very results driven. I found myself in the best shape ever. I decided to get my Crossfit L1 as well as my Crossfit L2 and have been coaching Crossfit since 2010. My favorite lift is The clean and Jerk. I love the complexity of the lift, it’s always challenging. My favorite PR was When I hit a PR Deadlift in my 50’s! This was exciting to me because I had no expectations of hitting PRs in my 50’s. As I age, I realize keeping fit and healthy is more important than ever. Never stop moving! just keep going!
